How to Change the Name on a Green Card

A green card is a residential permit being issued by the US government to the immigrants as a first step before becoming legal citizens of America. green card enables a person to work study or stay in the US without any disturbance. So it is considered as one of the most accepted ID proof in the US.
How to change your name on such a valid document? The answer is, If anybody wants to make any change on it, it affect directly on his permanent resident’s status. There fore, if you want to update your green card with the changed name, you will need to do it officially. You have to go through all official formalities to have it changed in your green card. More over, green card is going to be the official document to be considered when you are eligible to be come a us citizenship so while making name change in your green card, you need to be doubly cautious.
Steps to make name change in green card
I. First, download the application form from the official site. The form is application to Replace Permanent Resident Card which can be downloaded from USCIS official website. Fill it out with your current name and the new name to be incorporated in the relevant columns.
II. Copy of your marriage certificate or divorce certificate, whichever is the reason for name change, is to be attached along with the application form. Write your name as it is to be appeared on your green card.
III. You need to fill in your social security number, date of birth, gender, address and Alien registration number etc in par -1 and 2 of the application form. If you are a permanent resident of the US, in the box E of part -2 of the application form, it is to be mentioned as “My name has legally changed since the issuance of my existing card”. And if you are a conditional permanent resident, you may check out the part-b of the form for information.
IV. You must provide the processing information in part -3 of formI-90 such as your parents’ given names and the location of US embassy form where you were given the green card. If you have any physical disability, mention that information in part 4 and append your signature with valid phone number in Part-5 of the form-I-90.
V. Enclose a check in favor of US department of homeland Security. For name change, you need to pay only the application form fee and biometric fees. You can check out the fee structure on the official website of USCIS on its forms page itself. You can even contact them over phone also.
